Polkawatch, Decentralization Analytics, Continued Operation and Development
Hi Community,
We recently released a better Multi-Wallet user Interface and pushed for Polkawatch analytics integration in community projects and resources.
We created a MVP integration with Polkadot Staking Dashboard that allowed us to verify that bringing decentralization analytics closer to were the staking decissions are made is working well, as more nominations are getting analyzed now than ever before by simply linking both services.
On top of continued operation for 2023H2 (50% retroactive), we are also looking to:
Fully integrate Polkawatch Analytics in the Polkadot Staking Dashboard. Furthermore, after reaching for community feedback at sub0 conference, we decided to improve the Staking Dashboard Plugin system (already in development) as part of this cooperation so that other community projects can also be present at the Staking Dashboard too.
We also need to implement a different GeoLocation strategy, the network addressing in the heartbeats events is being phased out in Substrate, which forces us to look into this information at a lower protocol level: p2plib Distributed Hash Table (DHT) instead. Something that is also required for decentralization analytics of AURA parachains. Parachain support will provide further funding options, reducing dependency on the Treasury.
This milestone includes strategic developments but also singles out, and minimizes, continued operation costs, currently at 2.9K USD per month (including archive nodes and promotion), which is the sustainable cost for the community to keep decentralization analytics running in absence of service improvements/developments.

Re staking dashboard support, see This PR for the works done so far — the Polkawatch Plugin is now allowing us to display valiator decentralisation info directly in the app. I hope this proposal can further enhance the APIs and analytics Polkawatch offer, the re-worked Geolocation strategory will be vital for this.
Voting Aye when this moves to a referendum.
@rossbulat It also makes sense to have decentralisation stats directly on the desktop. Vote for #162 — Polkadot Live Desktop App (deciding now — 27.10) in addition to this and we will make it happen.

@kryptoschain thanks for taking your time to record the video, and for the good wishes.
As you say polkawatch is used by infrastructure providers/developers to check geographical/by network provider distribution before taking their own decissions, but this is not the only user group.
Polkawatch is also used by common stakers that want to ensure their nominations are not processed at certain network providers, we had many contacting us directly after hetzner kicked out solana nodes from their datacenter.
Polkawatch is also used by token holders that, in some cases, want to check the geolocation data before casting their votes in infrastructure projects.
And last there is a group of data scientists that reach out to polkawatch to get the data and test different hipotesis or learn from our network.
Of course Polkawatch is public and there may be other relevant group of users that never riched out directly to us.
We consider the common staker the most important group, because if Polkadot ever becomes a target of deplatforming, we will need nominators to adjust their nominations accordingly for our network to remain secure. In this sense, the integration with Polkadot Staking Dashboard is strategic for us.
