1TRIBE: Bridging Africa to the Future with Polkadot
We are proud to propose the 1TRIBE: Connecting Africa to the future with WEB3 and Polkadot project to the Polkadot community.
Our mission is to empower Africans with the knowledge and skills to participate in the decentralized web3 economy, with a particular focus on Polkadot, through innovative educational programs and engaging multimedia content.
At 1TRIBE, we recognize the power of radio as a tool for reaching a wider African audience. While our content primarily begins in a visual format, we recognize that not all individuals have access to the internet or the time to engage with visual content. Therefore, we have made it our mission to incorporate a radio format into our platform to ensure that our message reaches a wider audience.
Radio is a powerful and accessible means of information dissemination that has proven to be a vital tool for community development in Africa. It is estimated that over 90% of Africans have access to radio, making it the most widely used medium of communication on the continent. In addition, radio has a lower barrier to entry, making it a cost-effective method of reaching impoverished communities.
Aside from terrestrial radio, we have also recognized the potential of the online radio format. With the rise of affordable smartphones and the growing availability of mobile internet across Africa, online radio presents an excellent opportunity to reach even more people on the continent and the diaspora. Online radio also consumes less data and is therefore more affordable for Africans with limited data plans.
Our hybrid format allows us to convert our podcasts and visual content into radio format, ensuring that no content goes to waste and making our content accessible to a wider audience.
This approach allows us to use the power of radio to cast a wider net, reaching those who may not have access to the internet or simply prefer to engage with audio content.
We are proud to collaborate with the Web3 Foundation Technical Education Team to ensure that all our web3 education is informed by the best technical knowledge available.
Our goals for 1TRIBE are as follows:
-
Foster a diverse community of Africans, Africans in the diaspora, and people of African descent from around the world who are interested in web3 and Polkadot
-
Drive interest in web3 and Polkadot by seamlessly incorporating African music, art, and fashion
-
Educate Africa's budding entertainers, artists, musicians, and students about the potential of web3 and Polkadot
-
Provide a platform for discussions and education about web3 and Polkadot
-
Encourage the development and growth of the web3 ecosystem in
We believe that by achieving these goals, 1TRIBE will play a vital role in bridging Africa to the future with Polkadot. We thank the council for considering our proposal and look forward to the opportunity to build this novel approach to WEB3 education.

This is Csaint here, and I am thoroughly impressed with the level of thought, planning, and strategy that has gone into this proposal. The team appears to be professionals with deep roots in the audience they are intending to reach. Africa is an untapped area for potential new users and an area where true decentralized tech could really flourish. Their request for funding appears to be reasonable according to the amount of content they are releasing and number of members on their team. I hope the council can endorse this proposal This is not only about content, but education of their audience, which is paramount for Polkadot's vision!
Thank you for submitting this proposal for discussion by the community.
Without a doubt, there is a lot of room for dissemination and promotion of blockchain technologies and Web3 services across Africa. Polkadot as a network has grown a community of ambassadors on the continent, although it is still challenging to coordinate and run large scale initiatives on the African soil itself.
So, it is a positive to see a local project like 1TRIBE looking to onboard the ecosystem and help build the missing educational piece.
Here are a few remarks:
This initiative is like a compilation of various initiatives rather than a single project, which creates a lot of confusion about its actual purpose. While it is expected that 1TRIBE is a radio that run different programmes, I think that attempting to tie Polkadot into every programme is an overkill. For example, apart from #WELEARN, #Web3 digest, and (maybe) #Satoshi's Pupil, it is very difficult to see how the segments proposed naturally tie into blockchain technologies.
1TRIBE proposes to run educational content on very cutting edge technologies, however the majority of team members do not seem to have any involvement in Web3 technologies and are more familiar with creative/visual arts. Who is going to produce/review/cross-check the content? I think it would be best that 1TRIBE partners with existing content creators/resources indexers to ensure that the information they share/relay is accurate and on-point. This would help cut the costs from the start.
The proposal does not provide hard data about 1TRIBE's performance as a media channel. Who are your regular listeners? From which countries do they come? How often do they engage with the radio programmes? Africa is a huge continent with many nations, so it is important to have some targets re: geo-location for the programmes that will be broadcast, not just general profiles.
Finally, I find the budget to be colossal for a team that doesn't have any history of building/producing anything blockchain or Polkadot. It is one thing to issue NFTs or explore new technologies from the perspective of music/arts, but education about blockchain technologies and Web3 requires solid understanding of the topics to avoid confusing users or repeating jargon.
I think it would be more judicious to start small with a proposal for 1 or 2 experimental programmes introducing blockchain topics to 1TRIBE's audience. Then, after the successful delivery of this initial proposal, an extension and/or a more expansive proposal can be made.
Looking forward to your take on this.
Thanks for your time! :)
