Summary of Proposal: Infrastructure Funding for Polkadot Asset Hub - Migration of Kusama NFTs
The Background
This proposal represents a strategic opportunity to migrate NFTs to Polkadot Asset Hub from Kusama Relay chain.
With 34,176 $KSM in total value locked in NFT sales and highly engaged users, Kusama has tremendous creative energy ready to expand Polkadot's reach.
Migrating these diverse high-value NFT collections, comprising 2,847 total collections, 23,529 unique owners, and 37,438 $KSM in total volume will attract artists, collectors and capital - priming Polkadot for the upcoming NFT bull run. Facilitating the secure transfer of assets to Polkadot Asset Hub will provide continuity for existing Kusama NFT creators and owners during this platform transition.
Who will deliver this?
KodaDot has unrivaled expertise in Substrate, NFTs and community growth specifically tailored to Kusama and Polkadot.
Our open-source tools already empower NFT creators and traders on both networks.
With skilled leadership, talented developers and an engaged community, we are uniquely equipped to handle this complex transition smoothly.
Problem Statement
Kusama's NFT ecosystem needs to migrate from the aging "graffiti" implementation to the new Polkadot Asset Hub. This poses challenges:
-
Preserving intricate NFT data like metadata, histories and ownership
-
No simple, reliable method for Kusama NFT owners to transfer assets
-
Platform change risks fracturing the thriving NFT community
-
No turnkey solution for mass migration while guaranteeing accuracy and security
In summary, the problem is executing safe, seamless migration without compromising asset provenance or community stability.
What's in it for Stakeholders
-
Polkadot Ecosystem: Readies ecosystem for NFT bull run by integrating Kusama NFTs and liquidity
-
Validators: Expected increase in transactions provides more validation opportunities
-
NFT Community: Benefits from more robust Polkadot Asset Hub and enhanced interoperability to expand reach
Onboarding Kusama NFT value and users can significantly expand Polkadot's utility and audience.
The Plan
KodaDot will develop robust, specialized tools to:
-
Securely transfer NFT metadata, provenance and ownership records
-
Map collections from Kusama into identical ones on Polkadot
-
Copy user-owned NFTs into new collections
-
Confirm transferred ownership rights
-
Store data securely to prevent loss
Our solution will minimize disruption and maximize continuity for the Kusama NFT ecosystem migrating to Polkadot.
Milestones
Milestones 1-3 as outlined below have already been completed. Details of the work delivered under each milestone can be verified by visiting the milestone reports linked here:
- Milestone 1 Report
- Milestone 2 Report
- Milestone 3 Report
- Milestone 4 involves building a robust NFT migration tool for seamless collection transfers, which is in progress and a report will be provided to the community through polkassembly.
Budget
$190,314.7 is requested to cover the work delivered in milestones 1-4.
Milestone 4 is set to be delivered on October 1st, 2023 and report will be provided to the community through polkassembly.
Proposal Reports
Quantitative metrics will track:
- Number of NFTs migrated
- User adoption rates
- Transaction volumes
- System stability
- Marketplace growth
Qualitative metrics will measure user satisfaction, community engagement, and on-chain activity.
Regular milestone reports will provide transparency on progress, achievements, challenges, and future plans.
Why This Matters
This migration stands to significantly expand Polkadot's capabilities and perception as the leader of the next-generation open blockspace ecosystem.
Onboarding Kusama's creative class will catalyze growth, innovation and cement Polkadot as the nexus point for multi-chain NFTs.

Hello Koda team, and thank You for pulling up this proposal. This proposal is a strategic move and a community-driven effort to ensure the smooth migration of Kusama's vibrant NFT ecosystem to the new Polkadot Asset Hub. The team behind the proposal, KodaDot, is equipped with unparalleled expertise tailored to the unique needs of Kusama and Polkadot. Their clear success in the initial milestones gives me full faith in their ability to manage the remaining tasks. Their plan to develop secure, specialized tools for transferring NFT metadata, provenance, and ownership records highlights a comprehensive strategy to maintain continuity and minimize disruption within the Kusama NFT community during its migration to Polkadot. The benefits to stakeholders, particularly the Polkadot ecosystem, are extensive. Integrating Kusama NFTs enhances Polkadot's offering, fostering increased community interaction and engagement. Validators can expect more validation opportunities, and the NFT community will gain from an enriched Polkadot Asset Hub with improved interoperability. Transparency and accountability are evident in the proposal's commitment to track quantitative and qualitative metrics such as user satisfaction, community engagement, and on-chain activity. This initiative is much more than a migration; it is a community-backed opportunity to broaden Polkadot's capabilities and solidify its role as a leader in the open blockspace ecosystem. By onboarding Kusama's creative class, we stand to ignite growth and innovation within Polkadot, setting new standards for multi-chain NFTs. For these community-centric and Polkadot-focused reasons, I vote 'Aye' on this proposal and encourage others to recognize its potential in shaping our shared future.
Hey guys, take my questions with a grain of salt perhaps as I might have a conflict of interest, as we work / worked with the same NFTs on Kusama and integrated uniques v1 from Statemine before on Singular. First of all I think this is a good initiative, I think any solution to help NFT owners and creators to migrate their NFT away from a standard/chain where there's no possibility for any improvement or development of NFT functionality is very helpful. We are working on own migrator but I won't shill it here and it might not be ready before yours anyway. So Kudos for that. I wanted to ask, as I haven't seen in the proposal, if marketplace features will be included in this chunk of work, i.e. trading, namely: Direct List/Buy, Auctions, Offers, Atomic swaps, lazy mint (including whitelist). I know that trading is a bit tricky with asset hub nfts, as there's no such pallet on the parachain as of right now, I think the best solution might be to do trading through XCM by deploying an Ink! contract on another parachain. If this is not part of the proposal, do you have any plans/timeline for that? Also it might be important to let NFT owners know about this caveat. I understand that trading on Kusama extrinsic NFTs is basically a hack and is dangerous for users, but still this might be something that users and nft owners might expect by default. The Migration process is mostly taking a snapshot of extrinsics of users sending BURN system.rmrk extrinsic with a special note, and then re-minting the NFTs on AssetHub and transferring them to users right? Will you be paying the cost of all re-minting and Transfer of NFTs on the AssetHub? And if so, have you calculated how much this might cost potentially if ALL Kusama extrinsic NFTs would decide to migrate? And lastly, the Milestone 3 document could have been designed better in my opinion, it is not clear on which features listed there are already working on Kodadot and which ones will have to be built from the ground or adapted to work with Asset Hub nfts, and in case where they are already working, perhaps it should be noted that these are retroactive payments. Thanks, Yuri
