Kampela Productizing Proposal, Redux
As always, Alzymologist takes community feedback (made both publicly and via private channels) really seriously — so we’ve incorporated that feedback after community rejected our referendum #736, and are now ready to resubmit.
The major points improved are:
- Dock station is no longer in scope. We’ve understand the worries regarding the added complexity of having yet another device for us to design, debug and manufacture. While our engineering team is still confident about our ability to deliver the dock as specified, we’re hearing your concerns and will not be designing and building the device as a part of this grant. If adoption of Kampela would make it evident that the ability to use Kampela with desktop wallets is wanted, we would apply for a separate grant for USB dock design or figure out another funding source for it, if possible.
- We’re omitting all metadata-related work from this proposal. This was probably the most controversial topic in the original proposal; we understand the general stance of the community on this topic. In any case, we won’t be applying for any extra Treasury funding for metadata-related work, and will figure out other funding sources to do this work if it would become necessary.
- With initiatives like Polkadot UX Guild maturing, there’s little sense for us to bundle the work on ecosystem-wide UX improvement (even if narrowed down to only signing and key management-related topics) into this particular proposal.
The budgets, timeframes and team composition to fulfill these goals have been adjusted accordingly, please find the updated breakdown below.
Milestone | Duration (weeks) | UX | Kampela firmware | Siltti | Hardware design and manufacturing |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
#1 | 2 | User research | Resolve minor tech debts of Kampela with respect to ecosystem advance | iOS app MVP | New casing layout and simulations |
#2 | 10 | Kampela UX redesign | Derivations support; Ledger-compatible seed recovery; “UX meets security” iterative work | Andriod and iOS apps functional, derivations support, iOS app in Testflight | First prototypes in the new layout; fast-iteration prototypes for UX and firmware work |
#3 | 4 | Siltti redesign | Wrapping up the design work; hardware-assisted secret erasure | Iterative redesign implementation | Final touches on case ergonomics and possible touch/antenna interactions; optimizing device’s resistance to temperature, moisture and vibration |
#4 | 4 | Integrations, manuals, tutorials | Full design, test system, sealed release | Design implementation, store publication | Designing manufacturing processes for the production scale |
People involved | 1 x UX Lead; 0.5 x Technical Writer | 1 x Embedded Rust Engineer | 0.5 x Android Engineer; 0.5 x iOS Engineer | 0.5 x Electrical Engineer; 0.5 x Mechanical Engineer; 1 x Manufacturing Technician |
On top of that we would need a 1× Project Manager/Ecosystem Coordinator role, 1×Logistics and Operations manager, as well as 0.5× Head of Engineering (to make and supervise architectural decisions and cross-team integration and collaboration) throughout the duration of the project.

Regardless of the vote, we would like to leave you some comments. As a community we have not reached a consensus, that is why we abstain. Thank you for submitting your proposal and good luck.
Oneblock Voting in favor of Proposal 886 is a strategic move to support the advancement of the Kampela hardware wallet from a niche product to a mass-market device. With a strong focus on UX, integration, and open-source development, this proposal promises to deliver a user-friendly, widely compatible, and secure hardware wallet that will significantly enhance the Polkadot ecosystem. Proposal 886 addresses the shortcomings that led to the rejection of Proposal 736 by incorporating lessons learned and focusing more heavily on user-centered design and integration. This revised approach increases the likelihood of success and community support.
