TL:DR 👇🏼
About
This proposal requests funding to expand native NFT capabilities and seamless newcomer onboarding directly within Polkadot's Asset Hub. By closing critical gaps like limited minting, metadata modularity, interoperability, documentation and more, Asset Hub can transform into the welcoming hub for the next generation of digital ownership innovation on Polkadot.
Context
Interest in advanced NFT functionality grows rapidly network-wide, but foundational work remains across Polkadot to actualize this. Gaps risk fragmented experiences across disjointed offerings from various parachains. Whereas strong features like XCM, components and tooling in the Asset Hub can transform Polkadot into a robust base layer ushering the next NFT paradigm. Without addressing barriers here, Polkadot risks missing the window towards mainstream cultural adoption of web3 models, by allowing rival chains to dominate the NFT ecosystem - a pivotal gateway application driving this adoption.
Problem
Core NFT activities remain severely constrained in Asset Hub presently with no unified platform addressing needs at scale. This exacerbates barriers to mainstream adoption by creators, developers and businesses exploring web3 models.
Solution
KodaDot, as the top Polkadot dApp according to GitHub metrics, bringing specialized Substrate/NFT expertise, will integrate an advanced NFT pallet enabling features like customizable metadata, composability and modular roadmaps. Additional UI, SDKs and XCM utilization will provide delightful, intuitive experiences catering to both technical and non-technical users across chains.
Impact
Unlocking robust minting, ownership and composability establishes Asset Hub as the preferred all-in-one platform for consumers to create, manage and exchange NFTs across the Polkadot ecosystem. Users access the full suite of capabilities within one place, rather than a disjointed array of tools. This convenience and consolidation democratizes access for community growth, while increased utility benefits stakeholders like validators, DOT holders and DeFi protocols building atop the foundation.
Milestones
The work is structured across 8 milestones ensuring gradual, measurable progress:
- NFT Pallet Integration
- Landing Page Components
- Gallery View
- Minting Tools
- Profile Management
- Transfers & Teleportation
- XCM Auto-Teleport
- Ongoing Maintenance & Marketing
Milestones 1-7 are complete. Milestone 8 funds continued bug fixes, optimizations and customer support over 6 months.
Budget
The $530k budget is allocated towards the combined ~21k hours of development work across the 8 milestones based on resourcing needs. This covers robust solutions tailored for Polkadot while upholding strong technical quality standards throughout. KodaDot is fully open-sourced and has a bounties program in place which has disributed over $500k to developers building on Polkadot.

btw why do you guys insist on calling KodaDot the top dapp "based on github metrics"? You know literally no one rates an app by github metrics
-
Why do all polkadot ecosystem agents cheer when polkadot is amongst first 3 in developer activity in web3? Development activity is very important and unlike other projects / dapps in the ecosystem, we are building fully open source public good tech that anybody can use.
-
Besides that, we are polkadot native as much as it can be - through us, people are direclty interacting with $DOT token and leverage asset hub utilities.
apps are rated on user metrics, not developer ones
-
apps are rated on various metrics including developer activity, however at the moment we are hitting on average 13k users per month.
-
I will include it in the proposal perhaps to lighten this up.
How does this compete with the Kodadot Tanssi chain?
- So far there is no development on our chain with tanssi, we have just shown interest.
How does this compete with the multiple W3F DF grants around AssetHub NFTs?
- This is primarily components proposal, a.k.a. front-end stuff and whole UI for Asset Hub(s). I think we have applied for W3F granting for our indexer, which is already delivered and fully open sourced, however i’m not sure about the status. In either way, these should not collide, but i will double check and correct myself if necessary.
this is very confusing - the proposal is written in a way as if you're proposing to do a bunch of work, but this suggests you've already done it all
- It’s retroactive funding. I might add it between the lines but it is obvious that the work has been done and we would like to get funded for that.
which then brings me back to your previously approved proposal which involved moving NFTs from Kusama to Polkadot AssetHub
-
Those 2 proposals are not depending on each other, however migrator (for which we got out of 50k only 20k and still decided to deliver that, is on it’s way and should be most likely finished in 1-2 weeks. Migration is important, but not as important as building the infrastructure for polkadot Asset Hub and ofc Kusama.
-
Here is a small update, but a report is coming after the migrator is finished https://polkadot.polkassembly.io/post/1860#E4VKFr3Wiq840H6Jb8EG
And if these components are already done, that would suggest that Kodadot has built them as part of your UI, which is historical building and now asking for the Treasury to fund it?
- How is it historical? When you integrate new chain a lot of stuff has to change on your UI and we previously didn’t get funded for all these components. The whole platform went through redesign and the development costs money as we are hitting 200 PRs a month. Just as same as Nova wallet is constantly changing and upgrading their features, so do we, to make polkadot the hub for NFTs.
I'd love to see all these NFT people getting together and agreeing on one path forward - because I can think of at least 3 (Kodadot, the Bruno DF grant, and the Uniques DF grant) groups seeking funding to do their own thing with NFTs
- I don’t know this bruno guy. Unique is doing their own thing and have parachain. Why don’t they push their own initiatives, campaigns etc to grow polkadot nfts? We have been in touch with several projects but once everyone finds out that to integrate a project or a chain costs money (development), they kinda go their way. We’d love to collab with unique but i don’t see anything concrete from their side at the moment that would be appealing for us.
(more can be seen here, where KodaDot hasn’t even been mentioned nor even contacted)
- We are mostly the only ones doing some proper work with Asset Hub nft pallet. In the end, that’s where nft activity should be happening.
NFTs are already fragmented in this ecosystem (as well as being mostly ded) - splashing a load of funding on different directions all aiming to achieve the same thing feels like it's just gonna get even worse
- Mostly dead? Each week we launch NFT drops on Polkadot Asset Hub and they are minted out in 30 minutes. These are all unique adresses and users coming back. Either way, we do our best.
Without speaking to this individual proposal as I have not read it, I think the Koda team have built a great application and should be supported where possible. A brief look at Talisman opt-in analytics and I could see that in the last 90 days 13.5% wallet connections (unique users rather than cumulative) occurred on Kodadot.xyz, this is second only to the Talisman Portal which the Talisman Wallet links users to directly. Good luck with the proposal guys!
