Infrastructure Funding for Polkadot Asset Hub #3 - Atomic swaps, Offers, Maintenance

image.pngContext

>> Full proposal <<

KodaDot has established itself as the leading NFT marketplace on Polkadot Asset Hub, successfully delivering over 40 generative art drops and processing nearly 9,000 NFT mints with a 95%+ success rate. Our infrastructure currently handles 40,000 daily unique requests and maintains over 75,000 NFT metadata entries. As an open-source public good, we've distributed over $400k in bounties to more than 130 contributors, building essential NFT infrastructure for the entire ecosystem.

The Problem

KodaDot's rapid growth has brought us to a critical juncture. While we're successfully delivering regular generative art drops and serving a growing user base, we urgently need to secure long-term maintenance funding to sustain this public infrastructure. Without dedicated maintenance resources, we can't reliably expand to meet user demands for crucial features like trustless NFT trading and a comprehensive offers system. As the leading NFT platform on Polkadot Asset Hub, consistent maintenance, monitoring, and optimization are essential to ensure the platform remains reliable for the entire ecosystem.

Our Objectives

We aim to solve these issues by implementing secure peer-to-peer NFT trading through atomic swaps, enabling a flexible offer system for any NFT, and maintaining robust infrastructure. These improvements will significantly enhance the NFT trading experience on Polkadot, making it more competitive with other blockchain ecosystems.

The Solution

We're proposing three major developments:

  1. Atomic Swaps: A secure, trustless trading system allowing users to exchange NFTs directly without intermediaries. This includes multi-asset support and optimized pricing, ensuring safe and efficient trades.

  2. Offers System: A comprehensive bidding system enabling users to make offers on any NFT, whether listed or not. This includes time-limited offers, counter-offers, and a notification system to keep users engaged.

  3. Infrastructure Enhancement: Significant improvements to our backend systems, including optimized gateways processing, advanced caching, and enhanced IPFS pinning for reliable NFT metadata storage.

Technical Implementation

Our experienced team of five developers will build these features using our proven technical stack. We're extending our SubSquid indexing nodes, implementing new NFT pallet integrations, and enhancing our caching layer with Stellate. Performance targets include sub-3-second response times for offers, sub-5-second execution for swaps, and 99.9% system uptime.

Budget

The $280,000 budget breaks down into five focused milestones:

  • Offers Implementation: $40,000 (2 months)
  • Atomic Swaps: $40,000 (2 months)
  • Infrastructure Enhancement: $40,000 (2 months)
  • Community Features: $20,000 (1 month)
  • 12-Month Maintenance: $140,000

Each milestone has clear deliverables and success metrics, with progress tracked publicly on our GitHub repository. The maintenance period ensures continuous support and optimization as these features scale.

Disclosure:

This funding will ensure KodaDot continues to serve as a public good for the Polkadot ecosystem, maintaining and expanding essential NFT infrastructure that benefits the entire community.

You can track our progress at: https://github.com/orgs/kodadot/projects/22/views/1

This infrastructure upgrade represents a crucial step forward for Polkadot's NFT ecosystem, enhancing trading capabilities while maintaining our commitment to being an open-source public good.

Hi

THank you for your proposal.

Can you please provide some statistical data:

  • Number of trading
  • Trading volume
  • Total users
  • Active users per week, month

Can you please add some more information regarding this stuff: "

12-Month Maintenance: $140,000"

Thank you.

@ImdioR

Hi ImdioR,

Here’s the data you requested:

---

Platform Data

  • Total Users (GA): 71K since Jan 2021
  • Monthly Active Users (GA, Oct 2024): 4.2K
  • Weekly Active Users: 872
  • Daily Active Users: 201
  • Total Transactions (Indexer): 35,000+
  • Total Trading Volume: ~$92,210.91 across RMRK, Kusama, and Polkadot

Maintenance Milestone ($140,000 over 12 months)

Our $140,000 maintenance budget over 12 months ensures high standards for stability, security, and performance across KodaDot’s infrastructure. Key focus areas include:

  • NFTs Pallet Integration: Regular updates for compatibility with the latest runtime versions, ensuring optimal performance of NFT functionalities.
  • Core Components Maintenance: Support for key areas like Landing Page, Gallery, Minting, Profile, and Collection components to keep the user experience seamless.
  • Asset Management: Continuous support for Transfer systems, Teleportation features, Identity management, and Cart functionality.
  • Infrastructure Services: Ongoing upkeep of essential systems like Pinning services, Hypergate for optimized content delivery, SubSquid indexing, and Stellate caching.
  • XCM & Cross-chain Integrations: Maintenance for Auto-Teleport features, cross-chain messaging, and specific chain integrations.
  • API & Developer Tools: Regular updates for tools like the Uniquery SDK, PolySearch engine, price feeds, and developer documentation.
  • Technical Support: Dedicated support for users and developers, with consistent documentation updates and quick issue resolution.

As infrastructure providers, we deliver a stable and adaptable platform, but broader user growth and engagement rely on market dynamics and user adoption of Polkadot.

Please let us know if more specifics are needed.

Best,
The KodaDot Team

Atomic swaps is a very interesting feature, do you guys have a technical implementation of it or technical sketch on which chains are in the roadmap to support Assethub <> ChainX, which chains will the atomic swaps on assethub support? How will you guys do the Atomic swap order book?

Assethub <> Monero, Atomic swaps would be really cool to see and a great way to get more of the Monero community to get a foot in the Dotsama world but easily being able to swap monero to DOT(or whatever token) on Assethub.
