[Wish For Change] Referendum #1157 - Make polkadot.com code, open source

inWish For Change
Executed

This Wish-for-change proposal has been opened to gauge the community's opinion on whether the source code of the polkadot.com website should be made open source.

By opening the platform to the community, the project aims to promote transparency, security, and collaboration, key principles in blockchain technology.

An open-source website would allow developers to contribute improvements, identify vulnerabilities, and ensure the website aligns with Polkadot's decentralized ethos. The referendum offers all community members the opportunity to cast their vote and shape the future of the website's development.

Hey Nikos — Thanks for putting this in, it's on our plate and the website will be open-sourced. We'll keep the community up to speed on this and hope to share a timeline soon.

@DistractiveNH I hope you learn fast. You built a website for a blockchain and an open source ecosystem. There should be no "will be open sourced" and "will share a time line here".  Unless there is a very (VERY) valid reason (which I really cannot think of any), this should already be open source since the day of the launch.

GM!
It's a nice coincidence that this WiC is out, and it's not the first time we at Distractive have received this feedback.

I can already confirm that we have this as a deliverable for Q4 with the Web3 Foundation.

We couldn't implement that yet because shipping the website needed some control for the soft launch, and we are still in this phase. We first delivered the website to our eco for the soft launch to get your feedback on V0.1 and then included it for V1, embedded in a major announcement. If we had, the number of change requests would be 100 times the feedback we received. I can assure you that our hardcore team of dedicated colleagues wants to deliver an excellent product to our community.

I think that every other project manager would agree that adding another prominent Epic/Feature increases the project's complexity. But we will get there — soon.

By the way, we're soon opening our Ecosystem Resource Center with a community library with assets and templates for marketing material. We are already co-creating content and events with our eco. So we're already pretty open ;)

@EricDistractive I see absolutely no valid reason on the points you make. Parity and Polkadot have been releasing products and projects that were open-source from day 1. This is a website... This should be open source on day 0. As I keep saying, having the main Polkadot's website  shipped, with closed source code sends THE wrong message (and it is a VERY VERY wrong message) to everyone  in and out of the ecosystem. I hope you guys learn fast.
We need to show to developers of the ecosystem that open source matters (we even create a bounty for that).
