Increase of validators slots to 500 - last suggested increase until further notice by Parachains team

To gradually increase the number of slots for validators, I propose scheduling the increase over time for 200 slots. The scheduled event mechanism (submitted by external motion to council and then pass to referenda queue for vote) aims to increase the number of validator slots steadily upon certain conditions. In the case of Polkadot:

  • An increase by 1 every era (24hs)
  • A repetition of the increase for 100 eras for now.

This mechanism can be canceled or completed after 100 eras, and at that moment the community will be able review network metrics. The proposal aims to avoid an abrupt increase in the number of validators on the network and follows the recommendation of the parachains team as noted here.

The 1-per-era has been working quite well imho. Yes, it is slow, but it is slow and steady without putting pressure on the network from a security pv. A move of ~300 => ~500 would be around 200 days (100 days to ~400) - this is not radical and in addition to the end checkpoint also allows on-going checks as it increases. At this pace don't foresee the need for quick emergency measures along the way.

I like the gradual ramp-up. No need to hurry if security is at all a concern. Belt and suspenders never hurt anyone ;)
