This proposal aims provide funding for the 2023 Polkadot Summer Hackathon by Oneblock in China - for operations and prizes.

OneBlock, in collaboration with Parity Asia, successfully organized, operated and promoted the four Polkadot Hackathons in March 2021,June 2021,June 2022 and December 2022. OneBlock propose to continue the Polkadot Hackathon program in summer 2023, an essential part of the Substrate promotion and adoption initiatives in China, to promote Substrate as an open-source framework for developers and convert the Substrate learners from OneBlock’s ongoing Substrate courses to Substrate builders.

The polkadot hackathon in 2021 to 2022 was a success and it indeed helped to promote Substrate as an open-source framework for developers and convert the Substrate students from our ongoing Substrate courses to actually use Substrate to build projects. Receiving warm feedback from the developers, OneBlock decided to have 2023 polkadot summer hackathon and hereby submit this proposal for the necessary financial support on this event.

here and you can get all details here.

Hello Team,

A few questions and suggestions on the proposal document:

Suggestion: Please review the formatting of the proposal document so that all key points (i.e 1 to 4.7) are indexed in the document outline side panel.

OneBlock, aligning with Parity Asia’s Substrate initiatives, plans to run a Polkadot hackathon in July 2023. Oneblock submits this proposal for community review for the funding of 345,459.00 USD in DOT to cover the 2023 Polkadot Summer Hackathon (APAC edition). Oneblock will be managing the funds and will disclose the operation cost and prize disbursement in the post-event report attached with this proposal.

Q: Can you please give an indicative month or deadline for the publication of the post-event report?

Online Workshops and Office Hours
OneBlock plans to hold 6 workshops and 6 office hours during the time of the hackathon . Workshops are prepared sessions that focus on a particular topic, some on technical topics e.g. developing using smart contracts, and some on ecosystem introduction. Office hours have no agenda and allow teams to dial in and ask questions and advice about their current projects.

Q: Please clarify: does this refer to 6 hours per workshop, or 1 hour x 6 workshops?

3.3 Conversion Metrics (to measure how successful our course to convert students to actual builders)
The conversation rate of Substrate students from the ongoing Substrate courses to Substrate Builders (counting as the Hackathon participants) of 2021 hackathons is 31%.

Q: Can you provide a summary sheet with the data collected over the past hackathons?

4.1. Theme: The 2023 Summer Polkadot Hackathon in July 2023
This is the 5th Polkadot hackathon proposed . Get ready to build tools, Dapps, etc. based on the Polkadot ecology, and use your unique creative problem-solving skills! At the same time, as the final examination of the Substrate technical course, everyone can fully practice the technical knowledge learned in the course and complete their graduation works. Together, we can contribute to a fair, secure, and adaptive Web3.0.

Q: Where can we access/see some of the software/tools/dapps developed/built by prize recipients of previous OneBlock Hackathons?

4.2. Targeted developer groups

Q: Also, does OneBlock allow previous awardees/winners to participate in follow up hackathons? If so, what is the returning rate?

Demo Day: 7/16 10:00-12:00,14:00-17:00

Q: Can you provide an outline/agenda for this Demo day, with a breakdown of planned events/ activities?

Q1: Can you please give an indicative month or deadline for the publication of the post-event report?

OneBlock, aligning with Parity Asia’s Substrate initiatives, plans to run a Polkadot hackathon in July 2023 and publish the post-event report by the end of July at the latest.

Q2: Please clarify: does this refer to 6 hours per workshop, or 1 hour x 6 workshops?

Online Workshops and Office Hours OneBlock plans to hold 6 workshops once a week for 1 hour each and 6 office hours during the time of the hackathon . Workshops are prepared sessions that focus on a particular topic, some on technical topics e.g. developing using smart contracts, and some on ecosystem introduction. Office hours have no agenda and allow teams to dial in and ask questions and advice about their current projects.

Q3: Can you provide a summary sheet with the data collected over the past hackathons?

Here are some datasheet links from the previous Hackathons.

  1. Datasheet of Asia Polkadot Hackathon Spring 2021
  2. Datasheet of Asia Polkadot Hackathon Summer 2021
  3. Datasheet of Asia Polkadot Hackathon Summer 2022
  4. Datasheet of Asia Polkadot Hackathon Winter 2022

Q4: Where can we access/see some of the software/tools/dapps developed/built by prize recipients of previous OneBlock Hackathons?

Here are some github repository links of the previous Hackathons:

  1. 2021-spring
  2. 2021-summer
  3. 2022-summer
  4. 2022-winter

Q5: Also, does OneBlock allow previous awardees/winners to participate in follow up hackathons? If so, what is the returning rate?

We're allowing previous Hackathon winners to return. But they were not allowed to enter for the same project, and they were required to specify their work during the hackathon. The returning rate is about 20%, and most participants are first-time entries.

Q6: Can you provide an outline/agenda for this Demo day, with a breakdown of planned events/ activities?

The following is the detailed schedule for the final DemoDay:

  • 10:00–12:00 Demo First Half
  • 12:00–13:00 Lunch
  • 13:30–16:30 Demo Second Half
  • 16:30–17:00 Score Calculating
  • 17:00–17:30 Award Ceremony
  • 18:00–21:00 After Party

Hello Team,

Please consider submitting your request for funding through the Community events bounty.

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. We will go with the Event Bounty next time. This proposal has been queued for 5 weeks and will finish the discussion soon. We are under the time pressure to have the hackathon taking place together with the 2023 Decoded China at Shanghai China on July 15th. As far as I know the Event Bounty requires two months for the process because it is also congested by the side event requests for Decoded so we may not be able to make it on time, if we change to Event Bounty as this moment.
