Polkadot decentralization analytics, Continued Operation and Improvements.

Hello Community,

Polkadot, and generally speaking Substrate built block-chains have tremendous potential to deliver decentralized computing, however depending on how they are deployed and operated by the community the resulting system can be more or less centralized/decentralized.

When analyzing the degree of decentralization of the Polkadot Rely chain by the following variables: Region, Computing Network and Node Operator, it turns out that the network is very centralized with most of the public validation activity concentrated and a few Operators, Regions and Computing Networks.

Polkawatch is an analytic tool designed to measure effective decentralization of Polkadot’s Validation process. Polkawatch entered in production in 2022 Q2.

This proposal aims to fund the 2022 Q3 Continued Operation and implement Software Development and infrastructure improvements.

Our detailed proposal can be found here.

Hi, I was not aware of this project until I read this proposal. The truth is that I think it is very useful and important to know this information and data to measure the degree of decentralization of the ecosystem. I would like to know if you have the metrics of the visits that your project "Polkawatch" has (users that enter per day, navigation time on your platform, among others). I ask this to know the degree of profitability that this project has in relation to cost / use. Let me explain: It would be super unprofitable to invest treasury funds in a project that has no visits on its website or that nobody consults or enters to see the information (this does not mean that this is your case, it is just as an example). I would like to know these metrics so that perhaps you can invest more in Marketing and so more users who use polkadot will be informed; and even help you with the dissemination of this project at the community level so that more people enter and know Polkawatch. Greetings and much success in your project.

Yes, I was thinking about that too.

Here I share the traffic to the site since the launch announcement. This information has to be taken with a pitch of salt, as you say, because:

  • the generated traffic is based on organic activity after announcement only, as you say, no real marketing investment has been applied yet.
  • the UI is deficient, as we are trying to address in the proposal, mobile users do not achieve much compared to web users.

However there are some good in the data. Users with the lucky setup (desktop) do engage with the data, some are analyzing their own nomination and even some do it recurrently.

I was tempted to include an "ambassador part time role" at this stage that would promote the site across the multiple sister communities, forums, discords, etc. However, I thought that perhaps better to introduce it in the next quarter. This is of course open to feedback.

My rationale was to polish first UI and create the content marketing mechanism so that when the ambassador promotes the site there is something to subscribe to that can take care of recurrence.

I am also curious about partner marketing/integrations. We have reached out to a number of projects: staking dashboards, wallets, etc. And see if integrating the data brings significant more exposure of it. There is in the proposal work to achieve this.

So I thought that if we implement this first, an ambassador would be able to capture more deliverables: Subscriptions, Integrations/partnerships on top of improving site traffic, contribute to content marketing, etc.

I am open to feedback regarding when to introduce the marketing (now or Q4) and whether to add any other marketing mechanism, on top of the content marketing, partner integration and ambassador part time role.

What do you think?
