Proposal : Creation of sign language based tutorials around the Polkadot and Kusama for people with disabilities.

Update on 30st May 2022

This proposal does not get support from the council members of the community so we are postponing this tutorial series. Thank you for all the support.

My name is Sonal Banerjii. You can find me on riot as @sb_ksm:matrix.org. I have been writing documentation and translating Polkadot and Kusama content for the Urdu speaking community. I’ve been awarded multiple tips for my efforts towards the community.

According to the World Report on Disability by WHO from 2011, the most marginalised people when it comes to education are not the poor but rather people with special disabilities. Particularly in the crypto space, these folks are being widely excluded from even providing them the basics of crypto education.

It’s our duty to include newcomers into this industry through educating them properly and while there will always be people that are not willing to put in the time, we’ve seen over and over again that there’s many that do want to learn more, but simply can’t find good educational sources to do so.

Since Polkadot is one of the most used crypto platforms and we’re seeing so many folks getting acquainted with it, I believe opening up such a learning opportunity by teaching them just the basics would bring about a revolution in the crypto space.

Our goal with this proposal is to create 30 educational videos geared towards people with special disabilities with a focus on explaining the basics. Based on my research with sign language interpreters as well teachers and other creators in this space, creating sign language based videos require a couple of people including:

  • Sign language interpreters
  • Conceptual content creators
  • Instructional designers
  • Visual story makers
  • Editors

Connecting and getting all of these folks on board does require some funds and hence the need for this proposal.

You can take a look at the entire proposal here.

Since we would get all the above mentioned creators on board, we wanted to make sure that they have the resources in place to create these videos. Hence, we are proposing a one-time payment for all the milestones.

We would love to hear your feedback and get your thoughts around the project. Feel free to leave a comment below, or reach out via email, anytime.

This proposal looks good and this will empower the deaf community about cryptocurrency. As a community participant this is for the social cause but i have few questions that comes to my mind

  • What are the steps you will take to create awareness?
  • Are you creating the videos for a specific age group or also for children?
  • Do you feel that you will publish every video in a week, as i feel this will be really tough to enact this?
    Looking forward for your answers.

Thank you very much @@fardeen_haque for this questions. Here are the answers to your queries

  • We are in talks with some major NGOs and special ability schools online through various social media platforms who are willing to help us expand this and bring them into notice. This will help people with disabilities to learn about crypto ecosystem from a young age.

  • These videos are basically getting developed without any specific age group in mind. Anyone who has an interest in crypto and a basic understanding of technology can learn from this.

  • We are committed to release videos every week. The reason we have a couple of folks onboard is so we can divide the tasks and make sure we don’t compromise the quality of these videos.

Do let me know if you need me to go into any of these in more details or if you have any other questions.

Thanks for sharing your proposal! It might sound like a crass question but I wanted to ask if the video has subtitles why would you need sign language? I understand that it's much easier for sign language users to keep track of who's speaking with a qualified interpreter, who'll take on aspects of the character that they're conveying. And unlike sign language interpretation, subtitles rarely indicate sound effects or music, however, when it comes to educational videos are those factors particularly necessary?

Hi @5bc2c356c50e4a0fb504d4212 thanks for the question. And you are right, it is much easier for sign language users to follow sign language interpreters. In that essence, sign language folks consider this as their mother tongue, so no matter if you add captions to normal videos, it’ll be difficult to process and get the most out it.

It’s kinda like watching a foreign language film with captions, you would get the premise, but it’s difficult to know what each dialogue is supposed to be. And there are times when captions might be incorrect or out of sync.
